Is it possible to travel with an expired US passport?
- For travel to the United States, an expired U.S. passrect return travel until December 31, 2021, if it expired on or after January 1, 2020.
- Since July 1st, 2022, an expired passport cannot be used to travel to the United States, and travelers on an expired passport need to contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to apply for a new U.S. passport.
- For domestic travel, a valid ID is required to pass through TSA checkpoints, and an expired passport is not considered valid. However, you can still use an expired passport for domestic travel within the United States, but you may need to provide additional documentation to confirm your identity.
- For international travel, a valid passport is required, and it's recommended that the passport is valid for six months beyond the traveler's departure date.
- For travel to Canada or Mexico, a valid passport book, passport card, enhanced driver's license, or trusted traveler card is required for air travel, but for land and sea travel, other documents like a birth certificate or proof of citizenship can be used. However, an expired passport is not considered a valid ID.
